Black Trans Woman, Angel Elisha Walker, Missing in North Carolina
We recently received word that a 20-year-old Black transgender woman, Angel Elisha Walker, is missing.
She was last seen in Salisbury, NC on October 30 driving west away from the city on the highway, reports Planet Transgender.
Her car was found Sunday, November 23 in the opposite direction. The 2000 Pontiac Sunfire was burned so badly that it could not immediately be identified.
Authorities say Walker often travels to both Durham and the Camp Lejune area.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office at 704-216-8683.
The media has been misgendering Walker — an all too common reality for transgender women and men that make headlines. Community members and organizers are pressuring outlets to correct their reports.
UPDATE: NBC Charlotte/WCNC was among the multiple news stations and sites inaccurately reporting her gender identity. It appears they have removed all pronouns from their online story, although they’ve chosen to still use Angel Elisha Walker’s given name (you can reference the article here). Below is an updated list of outlets people can contact and urge to accurately report the identities of trans people, including when they are missing.
