Now we reach the tenth and final drabble in the, intended, birthday series of yore for elisi . After a wee bit of a *cough* delay anyway.

All ten are, or have been, connected to the events described in Chao-Ahn's message in http://kerkevik-2014.livejournal.com/104604.html which means that the origin story of this 'verse begins with its progenitors demise. There are many different roads to travel, and Spike will appear now and then; mysteries to be solved; snark to be dispensed, and strange messages from the beyond – and possibly sandwiches...

TITLE: “The Carnival is Over.”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTERS: Illyria; Spike,

WORD COUNT: 100,

A/N: “A single flow'r he sent me, since we met.

All tenderly his messenger he chose;

Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet -

One perfect rose.

I knew the language of the floweret;

'My fragile leaves', it said. 'his heart enclose'.

Love long has taken for his amulet

One perfect rose.

Why is it no one ever sent me yet

One perfect limousine, do you suppose?

Ah no, it's always just my luck to get

One perfect rose.

(One Perfect Rose by Dorothy Parker)

Part Ten: “The Carnival is Over.”

When she caught up with The Pet the battle was all but over.

He was as a berserker; ploughing through their serried ranks, even as they cut him down.

Again, and again.

He was singing.

Not the familiar folklore She associated with his maternal parent; one of more modern issue which, as she recalled him in his agony, brought a chill to her bones.

As furiously as she fought her way to him, she still could but watch him brought to his knees at the last.

She slaughter'd; hearing him faintly carolling as, last of the Old Ones, Illyria mourned.

* This is the song our hero is singing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAPMrg5Ct-I This song has played through my head repeatedly every time I've written in this 'verse – at least where Spike has been involved; mosr especially every time I see his last fight.

This is the ninth and penultimate drabble in the ten part series that I set out to write for elisi 's birthday back in 2012. This is one song I know wasn't in the original list, since I only knew what it was I wanted to write when I realised that Riley & Sam Finn were a pair in the stories they featured in; this then connected back to Illyria, and we get the La Ronde theme revealed.

Having been beating myself up for never finishing this series I think maybe I needed to get to a point where I could see them, or maybe hear them.

TITLE: “Lola.”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTERS: Illyria; Riley Finn; Sam Finn,

PAIRINGS: Riley/Sam;

WORD COUNT: 100,

A/N: “Why, now, blow wind, swell billow and swim bark!

The storm is up and all is on the hazard!”

(from Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare)

Part Nine: “Lola.”

The Finns consumed; discussing missions with The Pet.

Like most Humans they often saw only what they expected to see.

He was easily understood; a Hero of the olden times, oft-prepared to die before compromise.

The female was less easily read; outwardly pragmatic, this only seemed so because her end goals were so certain; nought could deflect her.

She accepted that if this Dark Slayer were seeking them, they would have to move; she took their word they would contact Angelus.

She needed him to arrive to help save The Pet.

But when she got back The Pet was gone.

This is the eighth of my ten-part 22'verse series of drabbles, originally intended for elisi 's birthday back in 2012. Obviously this got derailed a little, but recently I managed to get back on track and completed the series. Having written several more stories, with increasingly insistent, and important, characters I felt the need to go back and re-edit the 'origin' story of this 'verse. I plan to finish posting the ten fics tonight; early morning now, here in Scotland.

TITLE: “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTERS: Faith; Riley Finn; Sam Finn,

PAIRING: Riley/Sam;

WORD COUNT: 100,

A/N: “Not to say what everyone else was saying

not to believe what everyone else believed

not to do what everybody did,

then to refute what everyone else was saying

then to disprove what everyone else believed

then to deprecate what everybody did,

was his way to come by understanding

how everyone else was saying the same as he was saying

believing what he believed

and did what doing.”

(Different by Clere Parsons)

Part Eight: “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”

What makes you think we know anything?

Faith kept her thoughts to herself as Riley and Sam tried to stonewall her; pondering that Sam would soon outrank her husband. Having won a bet with Kennedy; got Red drunk to make sure she knew how to win the wager first, she'd followed Kenn to where the Finns were operating.

Jail having taught her patience she waited until Kenn left before she snuck inside to wait for them to return from whatever gig she'd sent them on.

She'd also read B's diary.

Faith knew how to keep her intelligence to herself too.

This is the seventh in a ten-part series of drabbles, originally intended for elisi's birthday three years ago. That plan got derailed halfway through, but I've recently been able to recover my original ideas and now plan on posting all ten tonight.

TITLE: “When a Man Loves a Woman.”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTERS: Faith; Xander,

PAIRING: Faith/Xander;

WORD COUNT: 100

A/N: “You only love

when you love in vain.

Try another radio probe

when ten have failed,

take two hundred rabbits

when a hundred have died:

only this is science.

You ask the secret.

It has just one name:

again.

In the end

a dog carries in his jaws

his image in the water,

people rivet the new moon,

I love you.

Like caryatids

our lifted arms

hold up time's granite load

and defeated

We shall always win.

(Ode to joy by Miroslav Holub)

Part Seven: “When a Man Loves a Woman.”

“Think a good fuck will help?

Faith was pissed.

I never asked that of you.

She fell quiet for a second; then swore under her breath.

He took her hand; kissing it. “I can't love you both?

She didn't pull her hand from his; but she did search his expression.

You love her more than me?” Which he'd never denied; his eventual response surprising her.

And for a lot longer,” adding, before she could answer that, “You love Buffy as much as I do.

Faith nodded ruefully, for this she could not deny either.

Matter settled, they made love.

This is the sixth of a ten-part drabble series set in the 22'verse, and originally intended for elisi 's birthday three years ago. Lost my way when it was half completed, but recently I was able to find my way back and finish the journey. This is then the first of that second half, so long delayed.

TITLE: “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTERS: Xander; Buffy,

WORD COUNT:100,

A/N: “The power of the night, the press of the storm,

The post of the foe;

Where he stands, the Arch Fear in a visible form,

Yet the strong man must go.”

(Prospice by Robert Browning)

Part Six: “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay”

Xander sat down beside Buffy; silently joining her in contemplating the fishermen landing their catches. He wanted to ask how she was doing, but changed his mind when she gently rested her head on his shoulder.

They both understood that she was handling Spike's death, but didn't want to talk about it just now. Not that they talked much these days; he was simply here for an old friend if she did want to talk.

They talked about his marriage to Faith some; other simple things, until the sun eventually went down, then he left her alone and went off to find his wife.

This is the fifth, and last, of the half completed ten part drabble series I was writing for elisi 's birthday three years ago. At this point I started to get far too complicated; possibly clever too, and drifted away from what had been my intended plan for the series. Recently I was able to recover that headspace I'd been in and finish the series; at least as close as I could get to my original idea.

This part will be behind a cut, as it gets pretty R-rated as Buffy forces Spike's 'That one time' secret from Satsu.

TITLE: “Three Steps to Heaven.”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTERS: Satsu; Buffy,

PAIRING: Buffy/Satsu;

WORD COUNT: 100,

A/N: “I give her the rose with unfurled petals.

She smiles

and crosses her legs.

I give her the shell with the swollen lip.

She laughs. I bite

and nuzzle her breasts.

I tell her, 'Feed me on flowers

with wide open mouths,'

and slowly,

she pulls down my head.

This is the fourth of the ten drabble series that I started to write for 's birthday three years ago. Only half completed I recently managed to finish them; out of nowhere it seems to me. I hope to have all ten posted tonight.

TITLE: “Standing in the Shadows of Love.”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTERS: Nina; Satsu,

WORD COUNT: 100 ,

A/N: “Some days suck and bring bad luck

with troubles by the load.

There's a pothole or a speed bump

every step along the road.

But here's the way I save the day --

I simply think of you.

That burst of sunshine makes me smile

and helps me make it through.

Part Four: “Standing in the Shadows of Love.”

Tomorrows game's on,” Nina announced to cheers from her class.

Though Satsu's raised eyebrows brought a smile it was obvious how tired she was.

It had to be tough; married as she was to Buffy's first great love.

Satsu's own marriage was hard to avoid; though everyone tried to keep affections discreet.

Even Andrew's married,” Buffy had joked once in bed.

Does he know that?” she'd quipped.

Mischievous, Satsu leant in and whispered, “Not playing?

Nina slapped her wrist.

Angel may have had his one time, but I'm a happily married mother; so bugger off!

Satsu smirked, “My intention exactly.

TITLE: “Waterloo Sunset.”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTERS: Angel; Nina,

PAIRING: Angel/Nina,

WORD COUNT: 100,

A/N: “Earth has not anything to show more fair:

Dull would he be of soul who could pass by

A sight so touching in its majesty:

This City now doth, like a garment, wear

The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,

Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie

Open unto the fields, and to the sky;

All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.

Never did sun more beautifully steep

In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;

Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!

The river glideth at his own sweet will:

Dear God! The very houses seem asleep;

And all that mighty heart is lying still!

Part Three: “Waterloo Sunset.”

Two hundred years; he could still the horses and their warm, fresh dung.

Which, nonetheless, smelt better than what often floated underneath the bridge.

The sun was the issue, he watched it rise wherever he could.

He never missed its setting.

As it disappeared he pressed his cheek back against the precious warmth of Nina's hand brushing agin it.

You should try to get some sleep; our flight to Conakry is early.

I wish I'd ~

We had to take a break;” she kissed his cheek.

She led him from the bridge by the hand; away from the accusing sunset.

This is the second of a ten-part drabble series; written three years ago and intended for elisi 's birthday. Only half completed at the time, I hope to finally have all ten posted tonight.

TITLE: “We Gotta Get Out of This Place.”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTERS: Illyria; Angel,

WORD COUNT: 100

A/N: “Now farewell light, thou sunshine bright,

And all beneath the sky.

May coward shame distain his name,

The wretch that dare not die!”

(Robert Burns: MacPherson's Farewell)

Part Two: “We Gotta Get Out of This Place.”

Her grief was like a raw burn; he was well used to it.

She was staring into the rain sodden sky.

We gotta get out of this place.

Turning her gaze on him she seemed tired.

Your speech has become corrupted.

Too much time around kids?

Are the young ones safely away?

Aye.

Leave us.

He thought to argue her order, but was stayed by her stiff tone.

They must not discover his Humanity.

Angel gazed one last time at that intensely annoying face, before walking away; rain hiding his tears, as it did hers.

He could walk home from here.

TITLE: “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?”

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

CHARACTER: Spike, Illyria,

WORD COUNT: 100

A/N: From the Death of Beowulf ~ “Beowulf spoke, despite his wounds. (He knew well he'd seen the last of this world's joys, that he'd numbered his last day.) “Now should I give my sons my battle garments, but fate did not grant that I have sons. I ruled the people fifty winters. Not one king among the neighbouring peoples dared greet me with a sword; I feared no one. I awaited my destiny well: never did I plot a quarrel, never did I swear an unjust oath. I take joy in this, despite a mortal wound. The Ruler of Mankind will not charge that I murdered a kinsman when my life departs this body.”

Part One: “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?”

She witnessed the fluttering of the Pet's eyelids; familiar scar obscured by the red life that fled him.

She felt a hand; feeble even for a mortal, inflict pressure on hers.

His breath hissed; nearly inaudible, the Pet uttered one word.

Slayer?

Muscle tightened, unaware it didn't exist.

Hair's the wrong colour.

A smile played on her lips; unwitnessed, for he could not see.

Heavens' tears were heavy in the air; redolent of Autumn and The Fall.

Have you ever seen the rain?

There was puzzlement on her face, she knew.

Then she saw with his clarity; blind as he was.

The Pet slipped away, as the rain fell.

TITLE: 22

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014

FANDOM: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

CHARACTERS: Buffy, Angel, Dawn, Rona, Chao-Ahn, various other characters being mentioned.

WORD COUNT: 1360

A/N: http://kerkevik.livejournal.com/19023.html contains the original version of this story; written before three characters; Satsu's wife (Gazaleh), Dawn's wife (Lisa, from “The Body”) and the Chaplain all became much clearer, and important, to my imagining of this world.

It was also written before I realised that Satsu & Gazaleh were connected so strongly to this older; polyamorous, version of Buffy.

Roughly two years after I first wrote in this Buffyverse; which I call the 22'verse, after this fic I began writing a series of drabbles for elisi 's birthday. I got badly detoured part way through that, though the initial image; with sound effects stayed strong in my mind. So strong it's taken more than three years to get my head back to where it needed to be to complete the stories.

I can't honestly say that the collection traversed the same path between part five and its conclusion that it did back then, but I have written other stories in this 'verse, and there will be many more; some, possibly peering back into Spike's adventures, as well as stories about the Slayers in those intervening years.

They never knew where they came from; every year, almost to the hour, they arrived.

Neither did they know who sent them. When the investigated, it always a different person; usually Human, and female, and always a friend to the sender.

They always sent a Council Operative; even Buffy couldn't get the Council she led to approve the release of an actual Slayer and, invariably, the word would come back that the return address 'was vacated within the last couple of days; rent paid up to the end of the month.

And always in untraceable currencies.

But she had a fair idea, since they always arrived in time for the anniversary of the night Buffy had been kicked out of her own house by Dawn and the others and it was always Dawn she remembered; Dawn she felt she'd let down by letting things get that bad.

The night she'd been held, comforted; strengthened to finish the fight by a stroppy, bitchy, poetic undead...

Whatever, wherever they were, they gathered at dawn for a breakfast of the contents of the packages; always as fresh as any guest of a five star Mayfair hotel could expect.

Nothing changed until the Slayers on the Council finally outnumbered the Watchers; when Buffy got Dawn installed as Council Head; together with Kennedy installed as Operations Chief of the newly-unified Intelligence Division.

Which, of course, meant she rarely saw either anymore; or their wives... especially Willow, because whither Kennedy etc...

Soon they had linked into the fact that it had always been the same woman; female usually; one of only two unconfirmed survivors of the Great Los Angeles Holocaust of '04, which had left the majority of southern California a blasted wasteland; LA itself a virtual no-man's land for Humans.

Once they knew for certain who She was, tracking down the identity of the sender, and his whereabouts was a cinch.

It had just turned dark on the evening of the twenty-fifth of June; two thousand and twenty-one of the Common Era, when Buffy sat down to review the daily reports from Senior Slayers across the globe.

She was on her fifth cup of very strong, and very bad – ironic, given they were based not too distant from the capital of one of the world's largest coffee producers – when a knock on the door announced the unexpected arrival of her kid sister, who entered the room with a very sober expression on her face.

Buffy saw past Dawn and saw others behind her, especially Satsu. A brief smile crossed her lips; she and the Head of Asian Operations always had a good time whenever she was at HQ; meals; walks, a fuck; as Satsu was wont to put it, despite she being a married woman, to an Iranian Ironwoman Buffy had ironically introduced her to, though her boss always countered she was as equally married to her destiny.

Then she saw Kennedy grasping Will's hand, which she rarely ever did; Dawn's wife standing behind them; Faith with Xander's arm around her shoulders; even rarer.

Her eyes travelled back to the wet glow to her sister's eyes; the bleakness of her expression, then back to the door as Vi and Rona, currently her senior Slayers based at, their always mobile, HQ; then Riley and Sam entered, holding the door wide as Angel pushed Giles in his wheelchair into the room.

Buffy felt a chill run through her; heart turning to a heavy lump forcing unwanted life through her veins; forcing her eyes down she stared blankly at the sheet of paper she'd been about to sign off on.

Insensibly she placed the black pen down, and pulled a victorian-era eagle feather quill pen that had been a reverse wedding gift.

Carefully, hiding the turmoil of her emotions, she dipped the nib into an inkwell.

Carefully she tapped off the excess, and inscribed a red number one in one of the columns; where she had been about to mark a zero in black. Laying down the pen she looked up as Dawn; hand stroking Buffy's hair placed the transcribed message in front of her sister.

Carefully She leant into Dawn's comforting arms as her eyes; brain took in the message that Chao-Ahn had sent from the West of Ireland.

Chao-Ahn's English was much better written, than spoken, but a smile threatened as she recalled the jokes that passed around the commissary at her exaggeration of her accent whenever she'd been regaling newbies with tales of slaying.

Having spoken to the inhabitants of Clonteach, I regret to report the death of William Pratt; known as Spike, this last seventh day of May, in the two thousand and twenty-first year of the Common Era. The Anglican Pastor; Reverend Jean Renfield, and Catholic Priest; Father William Donachie, of the parish, both reported how he seemed to appear from nowhere to defend the Combined Children's Pipe Band from Demons who attacked during practice in the Community Hall. He fell before a female of a blue demonic visage could reach him; she killed the demons who took his life.

Before she could take note of something erased from the message Angel was suddenly standing in front of her; Nina brushing his cheek with a kiss as he leant in and brushed tears from Buffy's face.

We thought we'd have breakfast in the courtyard at daybreak. The Chaplain will lead us in a prayer before we sing a hymn that he liked... if that's okay with you?

Numb, and simply grateful not to have to do too much thinking, she grasped his hand; feeling strange still over the unaccustomed heat it held, and squeezed it as everyone gathered around her; sharing an communal grief at a fallen comrade; at her loss, and the sense of their common mortality it all awakened.

They'd all known he was out there somewhere; somehow managing to make the Scarlet Pimpernel look as hard to find as Clem when there was a Cat Show in town. Known, but nobody had ever spoken, about the newly-assigned Slayers who reported being rescued by an indescribable stranger, and his companion, who never spoke to them.

~~~~~
As dawn broke the next morning; eighteen years and eighty days after that night he'd held her; given her the faith; strength, and courage to go out and enter the valley once more, the Chaplain raised her lone voice and led them all in singing Abide With Me, his favourite Hymn; the only Hymn they knew he knew if she was honest.
Buffy broke the seal of the tin box containing, as always, several dozen home-made victorian recipe ginger cook... biscuits, and several boxes of old-fashioned; as in loose, no bags for him, English Blend Indian Tea.
She watched as the now well-practiced rituals of this, their very own tea ceremony were played out; noting with tearful pleasure the greater than usual attendance then, when everybody had their cups of tea to hand, she got up to speak.
This poem was one of his favourites. It was written, he believed, to commemorate the pilots who defended his birthplace from the German Luftwaffe bombers during the Battle of Britain. It goes something like this...
Remember those not here today,
and those unwell, or far away.
And those who never lived to see
the end of War, and Victory.
And every friend who passed our way.
Remembered as of yesterday.
It's absent friends
We miss the most.
To all, let's drink a loving toast.
To some muted sounds of china cups touching; softly spoken, “To absent friends,” they all toasted ALL those who'd been lost; even if they were all focussed on different people.
She heard Rona, from somewhere to her left, and behind, say (in a bad cockney accent), “Goodbye, you wankers!
Bittersweet smile on her face she sought out Angel and, catching his eye, they shared a nod of acknowledgement, of their shared love of their lost friend, and of each other.
Mind full of the last time she'd seen him; her lover, she raised her cup to Angel and mouthed a silent, “Thanks.
TITLE: Haimischer Vampir
AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014
FANDOM: BtVS/Supernatural X-Over
CHARACTERS: Sam Winchester; Spike;
WORD COUNT: 500
PROMPT: Inspired by the current (for some time now) challenge at open_on_sunday #616: soap, but obviously far too long to fit there. Also inspired by the list of interests on aaronlisa 's profile page, which I was perusing as it is her birthday, and I was looking for ideas for possible gift-fics; one listed is buffyverse/supernatural (I presume x-over) fic.
Not sure at what stage in Supernatural this is set as I stopped watching abruptly at the end of S3, but I understand that both Winchester brothers have been dead at some point, so this is set at whatever time Sam is alone and hunting.
Sam leant down and picked up the strange smelling soap; lifted it to his face; whirling when a voice came out of the darkness.
Wouldn't do that mate.
Searching the darkness, Sam could see nothing; nor hear a breath. Then a cigarette light lit the face of – he readied to leap as he realised the figure was a vampire.
Who seemed strangely unconcerned about him, asking, after taking a drag of his cigarette, “You a hunter?
Sam nodded cautiously; still ready to attack, but wondering why a Vampire would make himself known when he could have killed without Sam even being aware he was there; not that he didn't have experience of unusual vampires.
You're a Winchester, ain't'cha?” Adding; offering a cigarette to Sam as he did so. “Your Dad nearly bagged me once; good man.
When Sam made no immediate move to relax, the vampire shrugged and gestured at the soap that Sam had dropped, “Won't be back for a while yet; might as well get some rest.
Sam risked a glance downward; then looked quizzically at the vampire, who grinned. “Made a deal with a demon to save his life; soap's made from some of his family members; figured he won't be able to resist.
Sam relaxed a little, but made no move to approach. Didn't seem to bother the vampire; who looked unusual in any case, but seemed to need to talk now he had a companion. He jumped when a bottle of beer was thrown to him, which he caught automatically.
Thank you,” making the vampire grin with his first words, Sam reached into a pocket for his swiss army knife.
He talks!
Raising a bottle of his own, he raised it; muttering, “To your Dad, eh?
Sam nodded, and lifted his bottle to his lips; trying to figure the creature out.
Where's your brother?
The creature seemed to sense Sam's distress, because he didn't press the issue; just shifting over a little to allow Sam to join him on the ledge he was sitting on; if he chose to do so.
Sam, truculently, and determindly taciturn, gestured at the soap.
The vampire took a drink, and a drag, before replying. “They were in Treblinka; feel kinda bad about killing him, but he didn't stop at Nazis. Been killing for seventy years; figured it was time to stop him.
Which was more info than Sam expected to get but, since it was pretty much why Sam had been hunting the demon; or whatever he should be called, he decided to join the vampire on the ledge. Company would be nice for once.
Chocolate bars and crisps ~ er chips in the backpack if you're hungry.
Sam nodded, but just leaned back against the wall.
Finally he said; almost inaudibly, “We should deal with him between us.
The vampire nodded; offering Sam his hand again; which he took this time.
Name's Spike,” Sam took the offered cigarette; lighting it.
Haafiz held on tight to Sargon; too small to swim, as Haalima, his beloved Sabeen's only girl, and a dreamer of magical tales; learned beyond his fathoming of so many things, swam; one arm held tight to the prow of the sinking lifeboat, straining as she drank in the salt waters of the Aegean, trying with superhuman strength for a fifteen year old girl to save what was left of her family.
Sabeen and the other boys might still be alive.
Might.
That was all the hope he had left; try as he might, he could not let go of that hope. The last sight he had had of his beloved and his other sons was of them running for shelter after, mercifully he supposed, narrowly avoiding being aboard the last boat trying to reach the ship they had safely reached.
Now he watched helplessly as Haalima tired, even as the island shore came into sight.
Baba!
Haafiz opened his eyes, closed only to pray for salvation for the three of them, and their missing family.
He cried out to the Prophet himself as he saw nothing of Haalima; she was gone beneath the water. Then, even as he prepared to sacrifice himself and Sargon in the hope that his wife and other sons would be saved, a ragged short-haired head surfaced; holding beyond all miracles a spluttering Haalima.
The creature, some kind of man, though so pale that he was almost the pallor of a ghost, swore in the tongue of the americans; though of a different accent. With a huge effort, he thrust Haalima into the lifeboat; into her father's arms, even as a dark-haired; as pale, man-thing, with the help of a woman, began to lift the prow of the lifeboat free of the water.
Bloody Heck! Didn't think I was going to reach her in time!” The woman retched as she expelled briny water from her lungs, leaving most of the swimming to her dark-haired companion, as she sought to bail water from the lifeboat.
You pouffes okay here? Spotted another boat in trouble; think I can get it ashore on my own, but they're going to start sinking soon I reckon.
The woman waved him away; unable to form true words as she fought the waters inside the lifeboat. Haafiz saw the lighter-haired one seem to blow the dark-haired one a kiss; say something in a foreign tongue Haafiz did not recognise; though the other two did.
The woman swore at him; making Haafiz redden at the thought of Haalima hearing the foul language from a woman. Then the man-thing who had saved Haalima swam away, mostly underwater; away from the direction of the shore they were now surely being pulled; somehow joined by two other woman, one pale and as red-haired as his beloved Sabeen; another darker skinned; almost as dark as the Abyssinian Priest who had attended the wedding of Sabeen's sister five years since; both now dead in the bombing of their home that had driven them to run for the sea.
Minutes later the woman was assisting Haafiz in reviving Haalima, and calming Sargon, after she had kissed the dark-haired one, before sending him off into the water again.
Make sure that fucking idiot doesn't kill himself playing the hero, yeah?
The dark-haired man thing laughed and, signalling to the other two to join him in rescuing their companion; if indeed he needed it.
Ten minutes passed before, with the three of them now safe in the hands of girls, who seemed as strong as they were; indeed as his Haalima had proved to be, the woman dived into the water, seeking to aid other survivors from the ship that had now disappeared beneath the Aegean.
Then his head turned as he heard badly garbled foulness in the arabic tongue aimed at a young girl Haafiz thought to be an Arab, who rose above two other who seemed Greek and seemed about to strike him with her fist.
Fuck me,” he cried; holding up hands in the manner of surrender, “didn't say I wasn't going back out; just need a bre – break is all.
The girl swore at him in a mixture of Kurdish and Assyrian, before rushing off to aid another young woman as two young men were pulled ashore.
Moments later; complaining with every step, though racing back to the rescuers and the rescued, the lighter-haired one was gone again.
Finally Haafiz feinted to the sand; feeling safe to do so as he saw Haalima; holding her crying younger brother in her arms; hugging him tight as she shed tears of relief herself.
He never saw their three saviours again; though the dark-skinned one came to talk to his daughter; together with another red-haired woman who had the sense of a magician about her. Haafiz sensed he was going to lose Haalima; in a manner, but she and they had reached safety.
He turned his mind to how he was going to reunite the rest of his family again.
I have written two longer fics based in this 'verse; these are included here with older links that will, hopefully before too long be replaced by ones more current. A/N 2: the full bible verse from which the title comes can be found here; the title version of it is a clue to events which will be more fully explored in a longer story, which has been too long delayed. http://www.biblestudytools.com/ncv/proverbs/4-25.html
I like Big Bird better,” her sire complained.
She thought the tiny female perfect; recalling fear as she did the calculations in her head.
Taking care to note the necklace she desired; her sire, and the sunlight creeping through the forest canopy.
When all were where they needed to be, she utilised her newly acquired speed; grabbing the bird, and necklace, as she muttered a spell then, just before silencing her sire forever, she uttered a phrase she knew better than her own name.
Hush, or it'll really hurt.
Watching fascinated as Dru floated off on the dawn breeze, Tara settled back into the small cave to doze away the daylight hours; all the time planning her next moves, which would have nothing; yet, to do with Sunnydale, or whatever the town was her Dru had been dragging her new pet.
She kept her eye on the bird as it slowly; with what must be great confusion, turned back into a living, breathing creature; not the makeshift stake she had made of it.
Tara wasn't decided on what was to befall Daddy Dearest and her brother.
Cousin Bethany though? She knew exactly what she was going to make of her.
This final prompt in this ten part series is the one that started it, and almost killed it too. I think I started working on these fics about Dawn and Lisa on the Saturday evening, properly anyway; managed to write fics for a few other prompts, but could not quite get these done before the remainder week finished. I'm pleased that I wouldn't give up on it though; even managing to create a new character; giving more depth to two others. Most pleasing is that I'm finally able to write the two main characters as an adult couple at last. Even if nobody reads, or comments, I feel able to say I have exceeded what I set out to do, and that ain't nothing.
A/N: Trillium is at the centre of a triangle of Hellmouth's, situated in Cleveland; Syracuse and Washington DC; known as the Tri-mouth, it has become the main base for the Slayer's. Another base has been established near London, under the command of Kennedy; others will, in time, follow.
They were shown a small room, with bed, shower, toilet and a kitchen of sorts.
Sarah had found a new life, briefly, before her girlfriend had left to take care of her parents.
She had a house now; left in her name in case her new life could not be rekindled.
Thrown out of her community for her 'sins against nature', and with the money left her by an uncle who, unknown to her, had been 'guilty' of the self-same sins she had bought the lease on the hardware store years ago.
She was still going to teach carpentry and plumbing and other self-sufficient life skills she had grown up with to locals seeking more independence.
The whole room was only a little less than twice the size of their own rooms at home, and they'd no space for books or much else; Sarah hadn't needed them.
But they'd have a place of their own, with only their own utilities to pay for, with the store below to use for study space, since they'd be locking and opening up for Sarah; helping out when they had free time.
As they held each other, the women saw the remainder of their lives unfolding before them.
The ninth, and penultimate story in this series about Dawn & Lisa is almost a mirror of the previous. This time we get a look at the close relationship between Lisa and her Father who, in my head canon, are almost more friends than father and daughter; becoming so when her mother died very early in Lisa's life.
Lisa had always kept a diary; written letters to her mom, often shared with her dad.
She also wrote lyrics; especially as her love of the more theatrical musical genres came to appeal more and more, delighting her when she was able to tease Dawn about her boyband fixations.
She won an essay contest with an essay about Oscar Wilde: Byron and Edgar Allen Poe, which won a hurried meeting between her teachers and father, before they, chastened, by his forceful support of her, allowed to enter it into the statewide contest.
He recognised it helped her deal with the loss of a mother she had never known; being too young to have any memories of her. He also saw her develop into a more intellectually confident version of her mother; indeed he found it fascinating and tearfully beautiful to see the woman he'd loved being reborn before his eyes.
So, as he listened between the pauses in their telephone conversations, he determined not to lose the woman his daughter had a chance of becoming; so full of potential, to the narrow-mindedness of his wife's family.
So he began to write her a letter, from her mother.
And himself.
In this, the eighth of the ten stories about Dawn & Lisa, we have the introduction of a new, and in future stories, both in this verse and others, major character. I have yet to fully describe her in mind yet; which is why she is not named here. She was inspired by the decision of the King of Morocco to establish a venue for the training of female clerics to minister to the spiritual needs of female muslims. She is a Slayer herself, but her clerical training, and spiritual outlook, will not allow her to take part in the violence of being a full Slayer.
Dawn had volunteered to become apprentice, of sorts, to Xander, and was the one usually called on when there were projects at Slayer Central than he alone couldn't handle. He was working on the gym when the new Chaplain came to them, needing help with a multi-faith pulpit-cum-altar she wanted built.
They quickly came to talk subjects beyond carpentry; Dawn most curious how a woman could become trained as an islamic cleric, while the Chaplain seemed most concerned with Tara and her defiant solitude in the face of the help offered by all concerned.
One clear afternoon, they went for a long stroll along the riverside; crossing via bridges a few times and taking in the views. There, finally, Dawn opened up about the tensions that had built up between her and Lisa; unexpectedly, in Dawn's mind, causing the very public fight on the campus, before their silent decisions to call separate cabs.
It also became clear that the Chaplain was also gay, though she seemed to prefer privacy where that was concerned; Dawn gaining her trust by making no outward mention of her obvious attraction to one of the Slayers.
Dawn though gained the courage she needed to mend the rift with Lisa.
As some have remarked I am poor at writing stories in chronological order; moreover, I would add, that I do not write stories, as such, but moments that try and build a picture from which a story can be imagined. Dawn and Lisa (her friend in the school scenes in “The Body”) have been a couple for quite some time; high school sweethearts they could be called, but now they both have to decide whether they can, together, take the major step beyond romance, into a more adult love.
Fall was a nightmare; Dawn unable to talk to anyone about why she was so short-tempered, and Lisa surrounded by a whole family trying to 'save' her, though she managed to find time, running, to cry over what might be a long wait to sin as she wished to; with whom she wished to.
Fortunately, as least as far as each could tell, no-one overheard them going over, word for word; self-recriminations innumerable, the row they had parted on.
Both had to find out of the way spots to release the tensions they had built up over time, by deciding to wait until college; cursing both the destruction of Sunnydale that had extended that wait almost beyond endurance.
Both ate their meals alone with their thoughts; only pretending to take part in the rituals of communal meals; easier for Dawn to actuate; easier for Lisa to deal with.
Dawn barely knew Kennedy, and Tara seemed to have changed drastically since Sunnydale; only capable of dark moods and solitude. Lisa had her father to talk to, though she couldn't tell him most of what she wanted to; knowing she'd be overheard.
They had a date, and a place.
That was all.
Hardest for me to write; this, the sixth of ten stories about Dawn and Lisa, as the only screen depictions of them in the same scenes were as schoolchildren in “The Body”. Having written them as a couple on many occasions now, it has taken me a long time to be able to start, truly, depicting them as fully realised adults. I hope it's working.
They devoured each other; somehow managing to tear only a single item of underwear between the two of them, as they gifted each other repeated orgasms; unleashing weeks, months, and years of desires on each others bodies. Dawn started to apologise for not shaving under her arms, only for Lisa to bury her face in them, each in turn; burying too a hand to the wrist in her, before she attempted to bury her head in Lisa as they colluded in an attempt to become one being. One squirted, unable to control herself, the other just drank her lover in.
We are approximately three years past where the TV series ended. In this 'verse the destruction of Sunnydale occurred about a year later and now, two years later, the bulk of the Slayer Army created during those events is based in Pennsylvania, in the town of Trillium.
Institute meant Slayer Central; nobody in town was fooled, but Trillium had never been safer, so The Institute it was.
The nightlife had never been better either, with the males in town satisfyingly better behaved; especially the single guys who were married.
The residents also brought something into Trillium that it had lacked before; a cultural richness that wasn't from books and films; practical, not intellectual.
Dawn showed Lisa the best places in town; which included the library, which had seen its book collection rise stratospherically in quality since their arrival.
Lisa had never expected to feel so at home. 100
They talked; able to without worry of being understood by bystanders, about what they felt and needed and wanted, as they walked through shops, before ending at the library's new eaterie.
Neither mentioned missing parents; nor Sunnydale by name, though when they sat down that was all they discussed; almost all.
They were silent for a moment, each having a hand atop one anothers, when a woman; reminding Dawn a little of her mom, rose from the table behind them.
In heavily accented; coded English, she told them she might have a solution for them; apologised for overhearing them too.
