As her bus pulled in and she alighted, Lisa felt a weight lift from her.

No bible quotes; no relatives praying in thanks; no behind the back mutterings about saving her.

She was glad too that she'd not contacted Dawn; needing to think about what she was doing.

They'd had their first real fight; married couple's fight, where both weren't talking, because they didn't want to worry the other.

Making it worse of course.

That train journey home she'd never wanted to hold, or be held by, Dawn so badly.

She need... they needed to talk.

About love and family.

Dawn, sweaty and still gasping for breath, started to pull clear of her dozing lover; intending to take a shower.

Lisa didn't seem to move at all, but the arm across Dawn's belly was suddenly holding her firmer, and there was a feint, “No, stay,

Dawn sighed, and relented; not too reluctantly. Lisa nuzzled at her armpit, and sniffed ostentatiously; she loved the way Dawn smelt after sex.

A lot it seemed.

Dawn grinned at the muffled biblical quotation, replying with, “and I wish to Know you as much as I can.

Lisa shook her head as Dawn held up another possibility.

She had to bite her lip; this was worse than the others.

Dawn knew fashion, but... just not hers.

She'd spotted stuff she could turn into something she'd wear, but this was all flowery and...

She snorted, unable to stop herself thinking Summer-y.

Dawn glowered back at her; then really took a look at what she was holding up.

Lisa came up behind her as, swearing under her breath, Dawn started to replace it.

Lisa stopped her.

“I'd love to take that off you.”

She loved it when Dawn flushed.

Dawn bit into her baklava; watching hopefully for Lisa's arrival.

Lisa had stayed in California with her father after Sunnydale's destruction; moving in with relatives in Cleveland for the same reasons Dawn lived with Buffy.

They had different majors; sharing some classes, but the longer travelling time had made this first year at college hard.

It had been a lonely week wondering if she would come this weekend.

They'd fought that last time at college.

She'd always looked forward to remainders week at Trillium's Public Library, and this was the first that conflated with free time for them both.

She knew Lisa would love the old shops in the district in which it sat.

If she... the barista passed her to open the door for Lisa as she walked in; arms full of bags.

She was wearing her mother's necklace.

Dawn, still full of doubt, pain, and insecurity because of her strange existence had.. said...

Lisa had lost her mother too; far too young to have any memories of hers as Dawn was blessed with.

Dropping her bags Lisa rushed to kiss Dawn, ignoring her stickiness; placed fingers over Dawn's lips as she made to speak, then kissed her again.

Drunk too.

Gwen had thought she knew a way to start the healing.

She was both wrong... and right.

Consulting no-one, she seduced him; getting him fed and drunk, and naked.

But he sobered up before she had to carry her plan through any further.

She was relieved; if a little hurt that he actually turned her down.

He returned to the team though.

SUMMARY: Joyce's reflections after moving to Sunnydale.

She did miss LA's bustle, but Sunnydale's quiet streets were a boon.

The gallery was popular; filling her time, so her friends; absentee when she'd needed them, were not as much a loss as she'd expected.

The social life was disappointingly suburban; satisfying nothing. She was the boss, so not readily invited into the settled lives of her employees.

She felt relief that there was only the one child; but regret there were no more was still keen.

At least Buffy had found friends quickly, though she still seemed so quiet.

Sunnydale had no bookshop, so she proactively thought Book Club.

Knowing she'd lose him to Nina, she felt little over Angel.

There was little over keeping Faith from Xander; they'd other reasons for their awkward silences.

Everyone missed Will, but when she wouldn't talk Kennedy didn't mind as much.

Until Gazaleh she felt some not being able to give Satsu what she needed.

She sometimes regretted Spike's absence, but nowhere as often as people assumed.

Regret can be a bitter poison, “ her mom told her, “too easily swallowed.

Buffy heard her; only regretting nobody realised she had what she really needed.

Caitlin didn't bother reporting to her desk when she got in; heading straight down to the lab for words with Abby.

After last night words needed to be had.

No regrets, but she'd forgotten how much she needed some sex in her life.

Both had been less than sober, but Abby's scent had been too intoxicating.

For either of them.

She wasn't the first woman Kate had slept with, but Abby was too young; too free and too important a part of the team for sex to interfere in their work.

All she told herself as she watched Abby from the doorway, stunned.

If Abby knew she was there, she didn't let on.

She seemed too engrossed in whatever totally inappropriate material was on the screen.

The scent coming from Abby now was lube as she worked a vibrator in her ass; fingers of the other hand in her pussy.

Almost before she realised what she was doing; certainly without hope of stopping herself, Kate had her pants open; underwear pulled aside.

Her own fingers working assiduously in unity as she kept her gaze tunnel-visioned on Abby's; Kate reached her orgasm bare moments after Abby reached hers.

As her vision cleared, she saw Abby watching her with a smile as she redressed herself.

It was perfectly clear that Abby needed to have no words with her.

Back to work, “ she said unrepentantly, as Kate hurriedly fixed her own clothing and wandered, a little dazed, back upstairs.

So we reach the final part of this epic ten-drabble world war two buffyverse adventure.
The real stars of the show are revealed; Holmes has found the killer has left the stage and we can look back on how things developed.
Well that, as in the 'masterpost' with all parts in one place will happen next week; partly because I want to give anyone who may happen to be actually reading this a chance to read all parts in situ, but also because I'd like to give myself every chance of exploiting this writing flood I have going on. The 'masterpost' will appear by the middle of next week then.
Comments on each section will be most appreciated; but also when that 'masterpost' appears comments there on the story as a whole will be appreciated in separation as 'twere.

TITLE: Promises Made to a Lady X. Life in Death
AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014
LENGTH: 100
A/N: Christmas here can mean whatever you (the reader) think it means. I would suspect that, to beings of our 'heros' vintage, that would mean the night of the 24th into the 25th of December; it could also cover the period of the traditional twelve days of christmas, or the time from shutting up shop on christmas eve to the conclusion of boxing day. I dare say there are other versions of this out there as well. I know when I think these events occur, but the actual time is of no great importance.
Worth remembering that at this time the now-famous 'Band if Brothers' were surviving the harshest of conditions in the Ardennes holding back Hitler's last gasp gamble to save his Reich. I believe he had gone insane by the time of the final collapse, and at this time was merely deluded as to his and countries situation. The defeat Germany experience over this period of weeks may have sent him insane though.
Was Gustav Frensburg merely deluded during the course of this story, or was his blind obsession a kind of temporary insanity? I know what I think, but what you choose to believe is your own decision.

X. Life in Death (Christmas 1944)

They hosted the Slayer at the villa; south of Versailles, where Dru had hidden during the occupation.
They shared their conquests with her as they made love.
His kills had all been Germans, or their collaborators; hers, with her lack of conscience, had been of any stripe that took her fancy, including Jews attempting to escape the Vichy government.
They were making love again when Spike told her how he'd watch Dru despatch the Slayer in Nineteen-Forty.
Then they fed on her together, though it was Dru who made the kill.
Spike was too much a gentleman to deny her.

Penultimate episode now; though if this was a TV show, or possibly one of the better movies this would be the last of the main action before the scene the real fans are rewarded with at the denouement.
This was the other part I had to rework a bit to remove the creeping errors that occur when you have to make changes earlier in the story; it remains the case this ten-part pre-series WWII buffyverse story was conceived and written in a few short hours last Sunday afternoon, while I was internet-less and unsatisfied with what I had on my external hard-drive.

A/N: Yes the title IS a play on the title of, possibly, British theatre's most-famous play, and Gustav is finally free of his obsession and is about to be a proper Watcher again, or..?

IX. The Trapping of a Mouse (November 1944)

Burnt down weeks ago, the barn was but a shell, but Gustav settled there to plan his next move anyway.
Finally he understood the leeches movements during the Occupaton. It had never intended escaping Dunkerque; killed Emilie. He had trailed it only to let her real killer escape.
There was still a chance the Slayer was alive; there was silence from the Watcher's.
He kicked a scorched pail; verdamnt, he should have...
It had too patriotic...

Spike rose from the corpse; deliciously licking a trail of it's blood from his chin.
Even he wasn't so stupid as to turn him.

VIII. Someone to Watch Over Me (September 1944)

He followed the watcher easily enough; she made little attempt at hiding.
She just seemed to be meeting with former...
Gustav cursed himself for an idiot when it occured to him she was not behaving as a watcher anymore. Then he got wind of the leech's meeting another, a female; insane spawn of Angelus, and not seen outside Paris since it's fall.
And last week had been the Slayer's eighteenth...
Now they were nowhere to be found...
Without thought Gustav headed straight for where he knew the leech would be.

Spike finished his last Gauloise, smiled, and followed their prey.

Feldwebel Marten Neuwenbeke fell this morning guarding the escape of his German SS comrades from the American forces attempting to entrap them east of Argentan. It is recommended that he be awarded, posthumously, an Iron Cross for...

Gustav Frensburg, had he known, would have been amused at the commendation; cold and bitter smile though it would have been.
He was already too far away. He had seen Watcher and Slayer, headed north toward the Canadians forcing closed the gap between Falaise and Argentan.
He had to stay with her; despite the risk.

TITLE: Promises Made to a Lady V. Messages from the Never Departed
AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014
LENGTH: 100
A/N: It's D-Day and the characters various endgames are beginning to come into play. One note here to be added to the narrative. Gustav was born in Germany on the other side of the border with Alsace, at a time when Alsace was a German province. His Slayer Emilie, though French-speaking, was conceived when Alsace was not yet under French control.

V. Messages from the Never Departed (June 1944)

The Slayer had four hours on Gustav before he hit Juno Beach; he was unconcerned.
Even a Slayer couldn't get ahead of him for days yet.
All changed radically when he found the note left on the body of a Flemish SS gunner.
Riddled with bullets; he was nevertheless not fooled.
As they moved the corpses from the emplacement; he spotted the message.
The German was horrendous, but translated into Quebecois it was crystal clear.
It was taunting him.
It was hunting her.
It helped that there never had been a Captaine Richard Neuvelle for a body to be found.

IV. Eye of the Mountain Dew (May 1944)

Whispers out of Watcher Headquarters reached Gustav early in Forty-Four.
He saw the Slayer himself in late May. She was Canadian-Indian, set to hunting the same leech as himself.
He nearly cursed in German on hearing she was going into Utah Beach; try as he might, he had no chance of being attached to her unit.
He had to calm himself with the knowledge that he would be between her and their target, with ample time to intercept them.
Determined to be there when it was dusted; confident of his tracking abilities, he kept his eye on the real prize.

Always close, but never close enough; not enough to risk the missions he was on.
Stories was all her heard; only cursed stories; never enough surety in them.
Rumours.
Stories of Germans; sometimes collaborators, disappearing mysteriously; agents rescued from dire need and returned to safety.

He watched shoreward as it disappeared over the horizon.
The tiny boat Gustav had been rescued from, sunk by his own people's gunfire.
Its eyes never left him either.
Of that he was certain.
Eyes closed, he could still see it. Too still, and far too heavily bandaged to be anything Human.

AUTHOR: kerkevik_2014
LENGTH: 100 words
CHARACTERS: All OC until the last couple of parts, unless you're paying attention of course.
SUMMARY: The story is about previous watchers and slayers, or seems to be, and is set between the fall of France in 1940 and just subsequent to the liberation of Paris in 1944.

I. Death in Life (May 1940)

Gustav found Emilie in an abandoned barn close to Dunkerque.
His Slayer had been killed by the leech, that was unmistakable.
He buried her deep; making sure her remains could not be misused.
She was Alsatian; he technically an enemy now, but he was able to give her the Catholic service.
They had that in common; she would have wanted it, and he owed his Slayer that.
Their tenure had always been stormy; his stubbornness had them part in anger.
Sending her to her death.
Picking up its tracks, Gustav made for Dunkerque; only vengeance on his mind now.
