Active Mormons downplayed it, like they always do. They're quick to turn on people who show signs of doubt, or admit to feeling hurt or betrayed by the church. Many of them latched on to the news that a lot of the people who resigned, that day, were already "inactive" (no longer attending), as a sign of their worthlessness and that they don't need them.
Personally, as someone who left several years ago over their treatment of LGBTQIA+ people, I was elated to see this. (I was also psyched about the earlier Ordain Women demonstrations, although I think that fizzled out as the patriarchy simultaneously cracked down on dissenters and made token gestures towards them.)
